About

The title was a mixture of a couple things. The idea is that living an easy life can betray us, as we later look back and question why we made all of our decisions based on our own comfort. Here are three inspirations for the title:

1. Track 6, “Comfort Betrays,” on As I Lay Dying’s album entitled An Ocean Between Us. It was actually the lyrics from another of my favorite songs from vocalist Tim Lambesis (“Losing Sight” on the album Shadows Are Security) that seems more relevant to this title. Those words include: ”How could we lose sight of what matters most? Trying to love what cannot love us back. All we have is not worth living for, if we do not know when to let go…”

2. The words of Jesus Christ in Matthew 19:23-26, in particular: “I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”  I can only assume that our own comfort betrays us if we let it.

3. Faithfulness in the life of Francis Chan, pastor of Cornerstone Church in Simi Valley, California; author of the book “Crazy Love.” It’s not often that you find a pastor of a large church that considers himself a volunteer, works as unpaid staff (and that in the context of one of the wealthiest areas of the world; median household income around $90,000), without wanting his congregation to even know this, so as not to attract attention to himself. With all the amazing things that come out of the church this guy leads, it’s astounding how consistently he fights against the temptation to take the credit for what is going on. I’ve witnessed this live in action as I sat under Chan’s teaching. Though comfort betrays, there is an alternative to a life just based on self pleasure, and I doubt Francis Chan will regret the choice he has made for the direction of his life.
